Cuisine in Barbados

Barbados is known for its vibrant culinary scene, offering a diverse range of flavors and influences.

Flying Fish: Considered the national dish of Barbados, flying fish is often prepared by lightly seasoning and battering the fish before frying it. It is commonly served with cou-cou (a cornmeal and okra dish) or rice and peas.

Cou-Cou and Flying Fish: This traditional Bajan dish consists of cornmeal and okra cooked together to create a smooth and creamy texture. It is typically served with steamed or fried flying fish.

Macaroni Pie: Similar to a baked macaroni and cheese, Bajan macaroni pie is a popular comfort food. It features macaroni pasta mixed with a cheesy sauce, often baked until golden and crispy on top.

Pudding and Souse: This is a unique combination of dishes typically served on Saturdays in Barbados. Pudding refers to a spiced sweet potato or breadfruit dish, while souse is pickled pork or chicken. It’s a flavorful and satisfying meal.

Fish Cakes: A popular street food in Barbados, fish cakes are made with seasoned saltfish (salted cod) mixed with flour, herbs, and spices. They are deep-fried until golden and served with a spicy dipping sauce.

Pepperpot: This is a hearty stew made with a variety of meats (such as beef, pork, and sometimes chicken), along with vegetables and spices. It is slow-cooked for hours, resulting in a rich and flavorful dish.

Rum: Barbados is famous for its rum production, so trying some local rum is a must. You can visit rum distilleries and sample different varieties, including aged and flavored rums.

Street Food: Barbados has a vibrant street food culture, with vendors selling favorites like fried chicken, rotis, fish cutters (sandwiches), and conkies (sweet cornmeal and coconut dumplings).

In addition to these traditional dishes, Barbados also offers a wide range of international cuisine due to its popularity as a tourist destination. From fine dining restaurants to beachside shacks, there are plenty of options to satisfy any palate.
